Online Exam Student Guide Using ProctorFree

To conduct online examinations, PATHFR uses a software called ProctorFree, with a video recorded session.

ProctorFree is a 10 year old, service oriented company providing automated, on-demand assessment delivery with online proctoring. ProctorFree uses facial detection to authenticate a test-taker’s identity and proctor the entire exam. It also uses an industry-leading analytics software to evaluate the entirety of each proctored session. After the exam has been completed the session is professionally reviewed by a human auditing team to ensure accuracy. ProctorFree is also able to disable browser navigation, disable print screen, disable copy, and paste and force a full screen browser mode once the test has begun.

The Process

  1. Fill out the exam scheduling form in the Student Dashboard. PATHFR requires at least 24 business hours to schedule a ProctorFree exam.
  2. Prepare a clean workspace when you are ready to take the exam. Your surface should be free of any distractions or devices. No one else should be present. All PATHFR exams are closed book and untimed.
  3. Open the two emails from ProctorFree, one includes an account verification email and one includes general information and directions.
  4. Log-in to ProctorFree using the email address and link sent to you in the previous step. Then create a new password for the first time you login.
  5. You will then be presented with a drop down to choose the institution name. Open the drop down and then select “Pathfinder Maritime Training.”
  6. Choose your exam(s) from the available list. The exact exam(s) will be sent to you by the Pathfinder team.
  7. Download the ProctorFree application (if you have not done so previously)
    • If you have issues during this process, you can click this green button in the bottom right-hand corner to chat with live support, which is available every day of the year from 9:00 AM to 4:00 AM Eastern time.
  8. Open up ProctorFree after it has been downloaded. ProctorFree is a three-step process. The first part of the process is compatibility tests.
    • You will need to have a camera, microphone, and no dual or secondary monitor hooked up, and basic internet speeds to complete the process.
  9. Then you will need to complete the authentication process. Display your I.D. to the camera, then place your head inside of the circle and click authenticate. The software will match you and your I.D. photo. It should take less than 60 seconds.
  10. After the authentication process has been completed, the exam password will be displayed and you will accept the conditions (where you understand you’re about to take a proctored exam and that your actions are going to be recorded).
  11. Once you click confirm and start, the video recording will pop up in the upper right-hand corner and you will be directed to the PATHFR testing page.
  12. You will also need to be logged into your PATHFR Course within
  13. The first question on the exam will prompt you to take a 360° recording of your room. Please slowly scan the room and include your work surface. Then begin the exam.
  14. Complete the exam during the proctored video session, submit your results, and review your grade.
  15. Click finish on the ProctorFree application. It reminds you to “make sure you don’t forget to submit your work.”
  16. After clicking finish the application closes out, and the exam session video is submitted to both ProctorFree and PATHFR for review. The software will also provide the ProctorFree and PATHFR teams with timestamps of any potential cheating.
  17. If a training chart was required for your exam, i.e. Chart Plotting, you will be prompted to place your training chart in provided sealed envelope prior to ending the video recording. The provided envelope will have a prepaid shipping label attached. You must return the chart to the Pathfinder team prior to your course certificate being issued.

  1. Your exam will be void & count as one of your three attempts if any of the following occur during your exam:
    • Cellular phone or other electronic device “goes off” during the exam
    • Internet connection drops for longer than 30 seconds
    • Student accesses computer program, software, or browser other than the exam
  2. If either the ProctorFree software, the ProctorFree review team, or the Pathfinder team believe any cheating has occurred, Pathfinder leadership will review the allegation & make a decision. If a Student is deemed to have cheated, the Student will be disenrolled from all PATHFR courses and no refund will be given. The incident and the Student will also be reported to the National Maritime Center.
